Oxford (30.06.10) Edinburgh Harley-Davidson rider Torquil Paterson is confident that he can make it into the top three at his home round of the Henderson Harley-Davidson XR1200 Trophy one make race series this weekend, after narrowly missing out on his first podium finish in the last event at Mallory Park.
Paterson, who holds the current fastest Superstock lap for the circuit*, set some impressive lap times during testing sessions at the Scottish circuit. He also proved that he can run at the front of the pack during round two of the series last weekend when he enjoyed a hard fought battle with championship contender Mike Edwards for third position on track. However, the experienced Edwards just had the edge and slotted on to the podium behind race winner Lea Gourlay and former MotoGP rider Jeremy McWilliams.
However, the Edinburgh rider and rest of the pack will have new competition to deal with in the double-header race event on Sunday 4 July as racing legend and homegrown rider Niall Mackenzie dusts off his leathers for a guest ride on behalf of Harley-Davidson UK. Mackenzie wore a huge grin on his face after his last outing on the XR1200® race bike during the development process and is looking forward to the fun of one make racing.
Scottish fans will be spoilt for choice with riders to cheer on with Glasgow-based West Coast Harley-Davidson also fielding Scottish endurance rider Gordon Grigor. It has taken Grigor slightly longer to settle into the season than expected, but he is gathering pace with every race and is aiming to achieve a series personal best this weekend in front of a home crowd.
The Henderson Harley-Davidson XR1200 Trophy will run two races as a support class at this year’s British Superbike Championship event and for those who can’t make it to the circuit it will be televised live on British Eurosport. Practice and qualifying sessions will run on Saturday 3 July.
*Superstock fastest lap set 16/07/06 – 50.810 seconds, 90.07mph
